Perlite is a Slag-Holding compound. It is added as a slag coagulant in continues induction furnace and in molten metal pouring ladles, prior to pouring in the mould. It may be added either to the surface of the bath after the ladles is filled or to the bottom of the ladle after a heel of molten metal has been poured. In application, Perlite has got tendency to exfoliate on the temperature above 800’C, so it will expand when it comes into contact with melt, forming a lightweight, viscous cellular accumulation. This accumulation of Perlite attracts all individual slag particles in the metal, cleans the metal by coagulating impurities, floating them up to the slag layer and also re-entry of the impurities into the metal. Perlite also helps in reducing Sulphur and Phosphorus compounds in the melt.
It ensures a clean metal surface free from Slag by co-agulating the impurities.
It forms an Efficient Insulating layer on the top of ladle which significantly reduces the radiant loss of heat that may be maintained until pouring time and hence therefore acts as an insulating barrier.
It also reduces Sulphur content and also prevents reentry into the bath when added to ladle by holding them in the slag.
It does not produce objectionable smoke or noxious fumes, hence non-polluting.
The additional benefit of using Perlite in excess will help reducing contents of Sulphur and Phosphorus.
Value Addition : Perlite Ore mixed with Raw Vermiculite can be a superior ladle topping agent. Since, exfoliation of Vermiculite is an endothermic reaction, so it helps to maintain the high temperature in ladle, also removes non-metallic inclusions in excess.
